Best Lullaby( Lories) Songs of Bollywood

Lullaby's or lorie songs as they are called in hindi, are often meant for infants to induce the later to go to sleep. They are slow, with simple harmony, swinging rhythm and generate infant's undivided attention.their tone and tempo is simple and repetitive.Paired with slow swinging motion, the lories are very much soothing and infants associate them with sleep. Some lories have hypnotic quality, whereas some express the mournful lament, the concerns and worries in the mind of mother.Whatever may be the meaning of the words, the lories induces relaxation, comfort and rest. The mother and infant develop a kind of affectionate bond, when  the mother sings lorie holding the infant to her chest with slow rhythmic swinging. The therapeutic effect of lullabies can thus have a strong impact on calming anxieties and nurturing bonds, which is especially important with premature and fragile infants.
Every human being, however grown he/she may be, has a infant within. That's why  even grown people adore listening to lullabys or lories to drive away the stress and worries. In hindi films we find many soothing lories beautifully pictured. here are lorries that  personally I like very much. Although the preferences differ from people to people, these melodies nevertheless, have inherent motherly emotions and affections that make them immortal.

1. Dheere Se Aa Jaa Re Akhianmein -Albela 1951-Lata Mangeshkar-Lyrics Rajendra Krishna-Music C.Ramchandra.

Even after 60 years, this lorie never fails to mesmrize and induce tranquil effect in the minds of listeners.Three generation have passed since the song was composed and still it is unforgettable.Nowadays the concept of lorie in films is no more, but in the Golden Era of hindi film songs (1950-65), was very much there, because of prevailing family values. This lorie is by far the best one. Lata's crystal voice has made it immortal. There is another version of this lorie by Lata and Ram Chitalkar pictured when Master Bhagwan drives a car. I often wondered whether any sane man can sing a lullaby while driving. It seems a crazy idea. Therefore I like Lata's version more personally and hence it  reflects at the top of the list.

2.Tim Tim Karte Tare-Film Chirag Kahan Roshni Kahan 1959-Lata Mangeshkar-Lyrics Prem Dhawan- Music Ravi

This is slow and sad version of happy and delightful song. Both are equally moving. The lyrics is also heart wrenching..."Jahaan bhi rahe tu raaja, rahe khush-haal, aur kya duaaen tujhe doon main mere laal, jug jug jiyo...." Is not this every mother's wish for her child. ? Meenakumari through her very expressive eyes, full of sorrow and agony, effectively conveys the sheer helplessness of an unfortunate mother separated from her child. As an accomplished actress, she has given justice to the role. Lata's superb rendition and Ravi's wonderful composition makes this melody unforgettable. Off course, Prem Dhawan's lyrics of profound emotion plays an important role in making the song touchy.

3.Aa Jaa Re Aa Nindiya Tu Aa- Film Do Bigha Zamin 1953-Lata Mangeshkar-Lyrics Shailendra-Music Salil Choudhary

when having seven to eight songs in a film was a norm, the Director of this film, the great Bimal Roy, took a courageous decision to have only 4 songs in his film Do Bigha Zamin. Yet the film was hit. He introduced a new talented composer Salil Choudhary by this film. Meenakumari had great respect for Bimal Roy. On the set of Parineeta, she saw some photographs of this film. She immediately sensed the distinctness of the film and requested Bimalda to give a role in the film however small it may be. Bimalda offered her a guest role.she performed the role with such dedication and affection that it is difficult to imagine that in real life she didn't had any kid. Notice the love and tender expressions in her moist eyes when the infant touches her cheek. The song was pictured in hurry, hence the infant was taken from one of minor actress present on the set. The name of that actress was Umadevi (Comedy actress Tuntun). Shailendra, a master of writing in simple yet profoundly meaningful words has given appropriate backdrop to this sublime melody composed by Salilda. And Lataji..as always with her pristine voice laden with emotions has delivered the song with perfection.

Soyi kali soya chaman pipal tale soyi hava,
Sab ranga ik rang me tune ye kya jaadu kiya
Aaa jaa re aa nidiya tu aa

4.Mai Gaoon Tu Chup Ho Ja- Film Do Aakhein Barah Hath 1957-Lata Mangeshkar-Lyrics Bharat Vyas- Music Vasant Desai

Such a beautiful lullaby.... suffused with tender feelings of motherly love and it never fails to immerse the listener in heavenly experience. It is this kind of music that removes the stress and spasms from our mind, ease the nerves and offer blissful and tranquil mood.Soft, soothing, serene, sublime... that's how the maestro, Vasant Desai's composition is, and so do Bharat Vyas's tender, loving lyrics, albeit with a touch of pathos. I am unable to find any word Lata sing like this, so soulfully, so tenderly. The song is picturised beautifully. The serene mood of the song was conveyed animals and their siblings slowly lulled to sleep, the effect of thuding of window pane on the pot.All in all this is a Timeless classic !

Dharatee kee kaya soyee, ambar kee maya soyee
Jhil-mil taro ke niche, sapno kee chhaya soyee
Mai dhundhu, ho mai dhundhu re too kho ja Mai jagu re too so ja....

5.Chanda Re Chanda Re-Asha Bhosale-Film Lajwanti 1958- Lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri- Music S.D.Burman

During the days when Lata's disassociation with S.D.Burman, Asha's voice which was hetherto was secondary to SDB camp, became prominent. Out of seven songs in this film six ware sung by Asha. The remaining song was given to Geeta Dutt.Along with the above lorie she sang "Koi Aaya Dhadkan kehati hai, Ga mere man ga, ( Two Parts) Chandamama mere dwar Aana, Kuch Din pahale Ek tal mein". All the songs were hit.The above lorie tops all.

6.Chanda Jale Pankh Jale- Film Pyar ki Pyas 1961-Lata Mangeshkar/ Geeta Dutt-Lyrics Bharat Vyas-Music Vasant Desai

This lorie comes in two version one by Lata and other Geeta Dutt. As both were consumate singers, both have given due justice to the song. As I said in intro, lullabys are meant for infants, but we never come out of them. This superb melody is simply adorable, with simple rhythmatic harmony with minimum archestra

. 7.Aaj Kal mein Dhal Gaya-Film Beti Bete 1964-Lyrics Shailendra-Shankar Jaikishan

how sad and touching.... Rafi and Lata ..how beautifully they emoted with all the feels...a medicine to the depressed soul..If you ever feel depressed, listen this lorie with your eyes closed and you will feel the peaceful bliss. Meaningful lyrics of Shailendra, rafi and Lata's voice complementing each other and the divine music of Shankar Jaikishan makes this song immortal.....

8.Nanha Mora Dole-Lata Mangeshkar-Film Garam Coat 1955-Lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri-Music Pt.Amarnath Chawla.

Another superb lorie. I don't know much about Classical Music and Ragas, but probably this is based on Rag Des. Pt.Amarnath was a very senior music director and elder brother of music director duo Husnalal Bhagatram. This is the only film for which he has composed the music.Other notable songs from this film are "Jogiyase Preet Kiye Dukh Hoy","Ghar Aaja More Raja" and "Kahiyo Roye Dukhiya Re" , all sung by Lata. The film however will be remembered for the sweet Meera Bhajan "Jogiya se Preet Kiye Dukh Hoy"......

9.Mere Chanda Mere Nanhe-Lata Mangeshkar-Film Aakhari Khat 1966-Lyrics Kaifi Azmi-Music Khayyam

Very emotional Lorie.Lata has poured all the feelings of tenderness in her divine voice. Kaifi Azmi's lyrics is touchy and heart wrenching and conveys the agony of separation. Khayyam's music is very sublime. All in all, superb lorie in all respects.

10. Chandan ka Palna-Hemant Kumar and Lata-Film Shabab 1954-Lyrics Shakeel Badayuni-Music Naushad

Another musical gem from Hemanda and Lata. The two divine voices have created a captivating and mesmerizing that made this low key unforgettable.
onche gagan se koi bulaaye
laayin hain pariyaan dolaa sajaaye
saajan se milne door chali jaa
udke tu nindiyaa phurr chali jaa
udke tu nindiyaa phurr chali jaa
chandaa pukaare aajaa chakori
Jhoolaa jhulaaun nindiyaa ko tori
chandan kaa palnaa resham ki dori
jhoolaa jhulaaun nindiyaa ko tori
chandan ka palnaa...
